Current Employment Opportunities Available - Accounting Specialist I 

Humboldt Bay Municipal Water District (HBMWD) is a Special District Government Agency that provides drinking water to over 90,000 residents of Humboldt County via wholesale contracts with seven local municipalities as well as some direct retail customers.  The District also provides raw (untreated) water to the Samoa Peninsula for industrial/business use.  We are comprised of a very small staff, who are very busy, all day, every day.  The staff of HBMWD takes great pride in our work, and strives to consistently raise the bar.  We make every effort to be open to new challenges and changes as the District continually works to increase efficiency and streamline our processes.  We are a small team that works together to accomplish big things!

Due to the upcoming retirement of a long-time employee, our Eureka office is currently seeking an individual to fill the Accounting Specialist position to complete our team.  This full-time, fully benefitted position plays a critical role in the day-today administrative functioning of the District.  The responsibilities of the Accounting Specialist position includes duties related to accounting and bookkeeping, human resources, and risk management. 

A summary of responsibilities for this position includes: overseeing all accounts payable/receivable activity, overseeing all payroll activity, maintaining a system of internal controls in accordance with GAAP, and other accounting duties as assigned; overseeing all benefit activities including enrollments, payments, liaisoning between employees and benefit providers, and any other human resource duties as assigned;  overseeing the preparation, processing, completion of all contracts, and all other risk management duties as assigned.  Familiarity with working for a government agency is preferred, but is not required.   Please see the full job description for Accounting Specialist I and Accounting Specialist II at

The ideal candidate will have a background in accounting/bookkeeping in addition to a wide skill-set including a great work ethic, strong attention to detail, prioritize accuracy, understand confidentiality requirements, and excellent oral and written communication skills.  Our new team member will be able to operate all essential office equipment, meet schedules and deadlines and be able to work both independently as well as in a team environment.  There will be training involved, so the ability to take guidance and direction, willingness to learn, research, and investigate unfamiliar topics will be essential.

While this is typically a Mon-Fri, 8am-5pm position, overtime, weekends and holidays may occasionally be required.  The salary range for this permanent, full-time position is $4,870 - $5,920 per month, dependent on experience, with a Board determrined COLA effectivde July 1, 2022. We also offer a terrific benefits package.  

Candidates will be required to complete skills tests in accounting/bookkeeping and Excel as part of the interview process.  A pre-employment physical and drug screen are required.  Candidate must possess valid California driver’s license.

A regional water wholesale system that supplies drinking water to seven municipal customers, serving over 90,000  people in Humboldt County, and delivers untreated water to industries located on the Samoa Peninsula.

Additionally, the District operates a hydroelectric generating facility, dam and reservoir at Ruth Lake
